The world’s first light bulb, how did it happen? When did Thailand first use light bulbs?

Light bulbs are important to help light up at night or add more highlights to the place, but did you know how the light bulb happened in our world, what has to go through, and who invented the world’s first light bulb. Today, we will tell you about it.

History and origin of the first light bulb

After scientists conducted experiments and found that lighting will occur when electricity is passed through some resistors until heat and light come out. The two inventors, Joseph Swan and Thomas Alva Edison tried to create a light bulb in different ways.

Mr. Joseph Wilson Swan

In 1900, an English chemist named Joseph Swan took the idea from scientists’ experiments, he invented the world’s first incandescent light bulb, but because the electrical system was not developed. As a result, people who buy light bulbs have to buy more generators, which are difficult to use.

Thomas Alva Edison Thomas (Alva Edison)

After the Swan’s success in inventing the lightbulb for some time, Thomas Alva Edison, an American inventor, and businessman was able to create some incandescent light bulbs but also developed the electrical systems in tandem with light bulbs, made of carbon rods and a power distribution system to homes. His lightbulb was more popular than Swan’s lightbulb.

History and origin of the first light bulb

Incandescent light bulb

When incandescent lamps are widely used There was a problem with incandescent light bulbs. That is the filament breaks easily and has a short lifespan of only 13 hours. Because it is made of carbon, which is not resistant to high heat, William Davis later invented a tungsten filament that can withstand heat up to 3,419 degrees Celsius during a high temperature of the filament 2,456 degrees Celsius. Although the filament break was solved, some particles of the tungsten filament were peeled off by high heat and stuck to the lamp surface and causing the lamp to shine less bright.

Neon lamp or fluorescent lamp

In 1934, George Clausik invented the world’s first neon lamp by injecting mercury vapor into the tube and coating the inner glass tube surface with fluorescent. After releasing electricity mercury vapor radiates in the form of radiation with a wavelength of 254 nm., it also needs to assist in the use of fluorescent lamps such as starters and ballasts.

Metal halide lamps

In 1960, metal halide lamps were invented using the principle of heating until it emits light and is discharged in a high-pressure gas lamp HID. Metal lamps are lamps with high luminous efficiency, but it has a high-power consumption of 100-3,500 watts, and the service life is from 8,000 to 10,000 hours, suitable for installing lamps in high places such as industrial plants, stadiums, parks, etc.

Light-emitting diode (LED)

After scientists discovered the world’s first LED in 1907 in the form of a semiconductor diode. A group of scientists by Mr.Nick Holonyak, developed the LEDs until they were able to separate the red light spectrum in 1962. After a while, the scientists separated the yellow and the blue light until they were able to create a white light LED succeed. Until 2014, the LED lighting system has been continuously developed and this type of light bulb has become a technology that changes the lighting system of the world, until now.

History of the first light bulb in Thailand

Back in 1878, Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakmontri joined the Siamese ambassador to England and saw the light of London at night. Therefore, he informs King Chulalongkorn, but the king still did not believe that there was electricity. Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakmontri, brought a plot of inherited land to ask His Majesty the King to buy it and get 180 weighs of money for an Italian military trainer named Yola. Traveled to buy a generator in London.

Mr. Mayola brought two generators and installed them at the front regiment hall before wiring to the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall, which is about to have a big event. Then, operate the power supply on September 20, 1884, which is the birthday of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn. This is considered the first time that Thailand has electricity.

His Majesty King Chulalongkorn’s vision was to bring electricity to replace lamps, which is more convenient and cost-effective than oil and gas used to light the lamp. Therefore, giving the money for the generator back to Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakmontri, he planned to have a larger power plant for the people.  Later in the year 1889, Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakmontri and his colleagues set up a company, Faifah Siam Kompani Limited, the light bulbs were brought into Thailand to be installed on the roads since.

You can see that the light bulb has been developed for a long time until today. Many manufacturers choose to produce lamps that are both good at lighting, energy-saving, and not polluting the environment. It is unlikely that in the future we may see a new light bulb that may use renewable energy that is good for our world.
